Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage - Album Review

Year: 2012

Gojira are all set to headline the Indian Metal Fest this December 15th. I had never listened to any of their work before. So I decided to give their latest offering a spin before the concert. And dare I say, Gojira might have found themselves a new fan in me.

These French metallers play a type of progressive / technical death metal laden with a lot of groove elements. Their latest work titled L'Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child ) was released through Roadrunner Records in June 2012.

Starting off , the first thing to hit me about the music was that it spans many styles and doesnt just stick to one particular genre. These guys are able to carry it off pretty well. The songs have uncommon structures, as expected from a progressive outfit.

'Explosia' is the first song , and what an opener it is. Some heavy and technical riffing , followed by some awesome drumming. The vocals are screamed, but in a really good way. The Song is a brilliant opener and sets the stage for more to come. The title track , 'L'Enfant Sauvage' showcases the melodic side of the band while not sacrificing in the heaviness section. Mario Duplantier is really talented behind the drum kit. The main riff during the chorus is very catchy and stays with you long after the track has ended.

'The Axe' and 'Liquid Fire',  carry on the momentum with some wonderful riffing and songwriting. A good mixture of screamed, growled and clean vocals in the latter. 'The Wild Healer' is a sort of an instrumental filler with a nintendo-esque electronic work in the back drop. Perhaps the weak link of the album?

The other standout tracks from this album are 'The Mouth Of Kala' , 'Born In Winter' and 'The Gift Of Guilt'. The opening riff from 'The Mouth Of Kala' follows basic death metal style. The song grew on me after a few listens. 'Born In Winter' has a hauntingly beautiful guitar work.

Overall, this album was a very enjoyable experience for me. Made me want to check out some of the band's earlier catalogue. The production is really good. Every instrument sounds perfect and even the bass is audible.  This is some really great metal.
Top Tracks: Explosia, Born In Winter, The Mouth Of Kala
