Comedy Rock / Metal is a genre which has very few artists that can be termed 'good'. More often, it lacks musically and sometimes the lyrics are not funny at all. Workshop, the side project of Sahil "the demonstealer" Makijha, is a band that manages to pull off both effectively.
Workshop had created a loyal fanbase for themselves with songs like "Bunty Aur Bubli" in their debut offering "Khooni Murga" (translates to Murderous Rooster ). Their second album, titled "Made Love To The Dragon", released earlier this year. There is a slight change in their line up compared to their debut. Goddess Gagged guitarist Devesh Dhayal replaces The Rajbot and Hellwind bassist Aditya Kadam replace Riju Dasgupta. The drumming is handled by Hamza Kazi.
Musically, as diverse as this album is, it is done very tastefully. It wouldn't be fair to categorize this album under a specific genre or sub genre. Songs here exhibit metal breakdowns, funky riffs, heavy blues and one song borders very close to being termed pop. The song Blues Motion features guest solos by Mattias Eklundh of Freak Kitchen and Swedish blues guitarist Christophe Godin.
The lyrics are one of the main highlights of this record. The songs contain raunchy tales (what else do you expect from an album titled "Made Love To The Dragon"), with a few satirical hints of the country's situation, sprinkled here and there . Listen to the last few lines of "Bhoot Bungla" to know what I mean. Most of the songs made me chuckle. Another aspect about the lyrics, is that Workshop have the ability to make them desi, which adds to the funny quotient.
Overall, this is a decent record, if not an exceptional one. A few songs could have been avoided, like track 09 (I dont know what else to call it), where it is just gibberish with an arabic sounding version of "Bunty Aur Bubli". Nonetheless, This album is worth buying and listening. It might just end up putting a smile on your face.
